Despite their different backgrounds, he of Javanese parentage and she of a West Sumatran/Lampung heritage, they've come together as a strong, united force to be reckoned with.
They emigrated to the United States in the late 80's with one goal in mind: to obtain the highest level of education possible for the betterment of their family.
Granddy's focus was on the economic/political field, striving to get a Ph.D in Economics but then changing to Political Science after a '92 trip back home. Throughout his pursuit of the degree, he worked various side jobs as a carpenter, dishwasher, graduate assistant, and driver. This instilled in him a bigger drive and the belief that if you have the will to do it, you can do anything. He is currently in the last hurdle of his educational journey, Insya Allah he will be done soon.
Uwo's passion was in the health field having obtained a dentistry degree from the prestigious University of Indonesia and Master's in Community Health as well as Public Administration. She had wanted to pursue a Ph.D in Public Health, but a trip back home erected a barrier to her goal that she wasn't able to climb over. An assistantship was lost because she went back home to help her sister who was struggling with leukemia. Coming back here to face her dreams cut short was hard on Uwo, but she decided that perhaps this was for the better as maybe Granddy really needed her support to finish his program.
Behind every successful man is a strong woman. And that is Uwo. She has been Granddy's number one supporter since even before they entered into marriage in the early 80's. Having met at the University of Indonesia, their ambition and passion melded together to form a mutual admiration and respect for one another that strengthed the foundations of their relationship.
Both went through personal sacrifices so they can lend their full support to the other, halting their career so the other can move forward or putting on hold a dream so another can pursue theirs.
Their relationship is truly one of teamwork and one that mommy and daddy could only hope to emulate.
